Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities Joins Make a Splash Initiative

MASLogoPrimaryMedAdvocates for Alexandria Aquatics (AAA) is pleased to be part of the effort to bring the Make a Splash program to our city.  AAA board member Carolyn Griglione and Barry Marlin of Potomac Marlins Swimming have worked with the city and the USA Swimming Foundation for many months to bring this to fruition. This is the first step in AAA’s efforts to ensure that every child in Alexandria learns to swim. The next step is to build a 50-meter pool at Chinquapin so that we have the capacity to teach all of those who do not know how to swim.

For Immediate Release: May 26, 2015

The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is excited to announce the joining of the USA Swimming Foundation’s water safety initiative, Make a Splash. The USA Swimming Foundation launched Make a Splash in 2007 with the goal to teach every child to learn to swim.  The USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash initiative also spreads the importance of water safety through the Make a Splash Tour, presented by Phillips 66. The tour, introduced in 2009, has been hosted in 35 cities nationwide. The objective is to convey the message of water safety and education to a wide audience of parents, learn-to-swim providers, educators, community leaders, and children.

For additional information on this collaboration, visit USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash initiative or call the David A. Miller, Division Chief, at 703.746.5495 (VA Relay 711).

Support AAA during Spring2ACTion tomorrow!

Advocates for Alexandria Aquatics (AAA) has a vision for a more vibrant future that includes safer pools and healthier communities and provides opportunities for all to learn and benefit from swimming.

AAA has been asked to raise $5 million in private sector funds over the next four years in order to help the City build, improve or replace pools at Chinquapin, Old Town, Warwick and Lee Center, and we are seeking your support during today’s Spring2Action giving initiative to raise $4,000 toward our long-term goal.

The Simpson Development Company has generously offered AAA a dollar-for-dollar matching grant up to $2,000 for funds that we raise tomorrow. If you support a new 50-meter pool at Chinquapin, improvements to our existing public pools and swim instruction for all Alexandria schoolchildren, then this is the perfect time to lend your financial support and have your donation doubled!

Your donation also helps us compete for Spring2Action’s $500 cash prize that will be awarded to the first-time participating organization with the most donors.
